What are best practices for offering a lead magnet on Substack?

My current method is to use a custom button leading to a Kit landing page - obviously, this does not encourage a Substack subscription.

I used to put the lead magnet directly in my welcome email, but I found that a lot of people had issues trying to download the lead magnet so now I put a link to my Gumroad store where the lead magnet is free. I don’t necessarily think I convert a lot of people on the download, but I know I am still getting a lot of subscribers offering it. I am considering putting a link to the PDF where they can download it from Google Docs, which might work better.

I house my lead magnets in a shared Google Drive folder. Best method in my opinion.

How do you capture emails by providing a link outside of when they subscribe? Are they coming back after looking at your LM?

I feel like I'm so new to this/Substack and trying to learn how I can increase my exposure and develop a greater following. Thanks for the tips, J.R.
