There are a few ways of doing this that I have used seeing as I don’t have a huge following anywhere in particular.
1. Medium: This is where the majority of my subscribers have come from (until I moved my newsletter to Substack, the growth here has been much different). However, with consistent posting, I have seen consistent growth over time on my email list.
2. Book Sales: I have a book on the Proverbs from the Bible. I put it up for free originally with a link in the front and back to sign up for my newsletter. Over half of my subs on that list (200 total) came from that book promotion.
3. Guest Posting and Being a Guest on Podcasts: When I wrote my first book, I went on several podcasts and guest wrote on a few blogs and then boosted my email list to 500 subscribers from 150. It took a while nailing down people to get on their content, but a couple of them really made the difference.
These are three ways to do it without having a huge social media following. With growing that following it just means putting out something everyday and inviting them to follow you or sub to your email list. That’s a huge grind though.
Thanks for such a thoughtful response! This is really helpful.
You bet!
These are helpful tips. I've self-published two books in the past and didn't have a strategy. I'll keep your tips in mind going forward.
I'd love to learn more about how you grow an email list without growing a massive social media following.
