I’m Trying A New Program for Self-Publishing Software
Atticus: Writing and Formatting Your Self-Published Books
Most authors don’t like change. I get it. Why mess with something that had worked for 15 books and counting? After all, I put the time, energy, and money into fine tuning my previous system for writing, editing, and formatting my books.
Yet, I have been drawn to a program that so many authors love. These authors rave about how much they enjoy its ease of use and simplicity.
What is the program? Atticus.
What is Atticus, anyway? I googled it a few times to find out, and finally, after a few encouraging nudges from other writing friends, I decided to take the leap and give the program a try.
If you have no idea what I’m talking about, here is what Atticus is:
Create professional print books and eBooks easily with the all-in-one book writing software. - Per their website
What grabs my attention is that my formatting software is all right. I like it, and it has worked well. But I’ve never enjoyed writing in the software, so I always write in Apple Notes, transfer to Google Docs for editing, and then to Vellum (the old provider for my formatting).
But Atticus seems very easy to write in and to download a docx file to send to my editor. Then, I can upload said edited file and make sure everything looks just right. Something about the software makes me feel like this is the place to be and what I have been missing.
So, I’m going to give it a try.
30-Day Atticus Experiment
I have decided to take the next 30 days to try out this program. Others have suggested that I use it, and I have really wanted to, but I have been reluctant to purchase an entirely new program for writing and editing my books.
Over the next 30 days, I am going to dive into Atticus and use it to do three things:
I am going to work on a brand new book in the program. My goal is to publish it this month and see how it does in print and on Kindle.
I will also re-format an older book with it to see how it looks and how well the program adapts to an older version. Then, I will update that one on Amazon KDP.
I will play around with starting a book from scratch, using posts from LinkedIn. I want to see how writing on the platform feels, how it transfers to LinkedIn, and how it transfers back to creating a book.
It might seem like a tall order, but I have this feeling that Atticus is going to blow my mind. And if it doesn’t, that is fine, too, but I want to truly give it a workout in order to rule it out for the future or to share it with other authors and writers who could take full advantage.
What is the point of trying this software out?
50% of writers tell me they don’t have the time to write and publish their books. And while I think that is a load of crap, I understand. After all, I’m married with three kids and a full-time day job, my wife and I lead a house church, and there are plenty of projects to be doing on our five-acre hobby farm.
Yet, I have found the time to publish 15 books in the last five years.
Now, I want to remove the barrier of not having time to write a book by finding software that can help reduce that problem. After reading all that I have about Atticus, I think this might be another one of those programs that will help aspiring authors stop being aspiring and start being authors.
So, that is part of the reason that I am sharing the progress that I have with this PR. I am also ready to find something to make it even easier for me to write and publish books.
So, stick with me over the next 30 days and you will be hearing more from me on how this goes, and if I like, you will know.
My name is J.R. Heimbigner, and I am a #1 Bestselling Author on Amazon with 15 self-published books.

I love Atticus, have used it for my last 4 books, and am planning on using it for the next 16 I have planned and beyond.
I’ll read with expectations. I need something different. My Microsoft is wonky. I want an Apple tablet or maybe just MacBook? Techno, the little demon, has never been my friend. Maybe this will help take authority over him, release him and transfer my dream back to me. Formatting and publishing hinders my confidence.
