I recently posted on LinkedIn about something a manager once said to me at my day job. It forced me to ask for a demotion that was so good for my family.
While talking with a friend online, he couldn’t believe I would outright talk about an instance within the last year. Yet, I knew I couldn’t help but do it.
As we talked more about it, he said, “This is the kind of thing I would expect when you are writing.”
When I asked why, he shared how he appreciates how open I am about what I’m going through, how I am willing to write about my faith even if people are going to give me a bad time, and how I share about my family regularly.
He said that not many people are willing to do that anymore, and it helps put him at ease when he comes across my writing.
Talking About Your Five Pillars
My wife has started a new venture as a shampoo company's online affiliate/salesperson. We have been using the product; it’s been great. And they have a program to sign up to help sell.
While she was working her way through the training, one of the people talked about having five pillars that you talk about at any given time via your social media about your life.
As she was nailing down the five things she talks about, it made me think more about the main things I talk about. And as a writer and Christian, it made me think about how essential it is for the content I create.
After all, what are the pillars of our lives? What are the things that make up our “brand.” As a writer, this is hugely important. If we have a core message and write about those things all the time, that will help us greatly.
As a Christian, I’m not saying we must create this fake brand that markets Christianity. But I am saying that we need to focus on what our lives are really about and share it with the world, whether you’re a writer or not.
What are the most important things to share?
As I have been mulling over these things, especially in light of my change in the direction of writing, I have been asking God what he thinks. This is the natural direction I take before I do anything, and I thought I’d share what I am feeling and hearing.
I already knew my life was about my faith and family. Growing up, I knew I wanted to marry and have kids. These are easy first steps if I am talking about my life. Another thing is that I want to talk about writing books and where I am at in the process.
But, if I were to think about one or two other parts of who I am and what I am about, I had to dig a little deeper.
While sipping my coffee this morning, I was reminded I am about everyday people. People who have family and jobs and side hustles. I believe these are the people who will ultimately change the world.
I also realized I have a strong sense of helping men walk in their true identity and out of the struggles and lies that hold them back from being who they were made to be. And this comes out of my life more than I would care to admit.
What about you?
As a writer, a Christian, or whatever else you find your identity in, what are the things most important for you to share with the world? Can you name three to five “pillars” of your life? If someone asked a friend about you, what would your friend say?
We are going into a time where this will be important. We need to know who we are and what is most important. This way, we can eliminate the things that are meaningless and a waste of time in our lives.
After all, we live in a time where we have more information and connection, and things that can influence us than ever before. The world is so much smaller because of the internet. And we have infinite resources at our fingertips.
What is your life about? What are your pillars? Are you brave enough to share them in the comments? I’d like to invite you to do so.
