Substack Is The Best Place To Start Your Author Platform
Every Minimalist Author Should Start Here!
Substack is one of the best platforms for an author.
Especially for Minimalist Authors.
It is perfect for building a following, growing an email list, and selling books. This is what I do and why it works.
Honestly, you can do it all with this website:
Create with Substack Notes like you would on any other social media platform. Then, post those Notes on the other platforms.
Write blog posts regularly to build a catalog of work. Then, repurpose those posts for places like Medium.
Send emails regularly to your subscribers, who are then available to review on Substack so you can create backlinks.
All the while, you can sell your books like I do.
Sure, there are some downfalls to the platform:
There are no automated email sequences to send your subscribers a series of emails after a sign-up.
Downloadable content from the platform doesn't always work, which is a bummer but not the worst thing on the planet.
Analytics are improving, but even the purest stats analyzers don’t like the simplicity of the stats coming from posts and emails.
But, the platform is continually working to improve.
Since I have been on Substack (nearly two years ago), I have found that the platform is continually growing and improving.
They have added:
Notes
DMs
Recommendations (which is enormous!)
Various other improvements have been updated and added (if you know of some you like, share them below). But the three that have made a big difference to me.
Why You Should Consider Substack as Your Home Base
Here is a list of benefits that I think are essential for you to consider as a Minimalist Author and creator:
It’s free to use. There are no costs, and if you want to monetize, they take a cut; they don’t charge you a monthly fee even if you don’t make money. They earn when you earn.
Multifaceted. The platform has Notes, blog posts, and email. This is huge for creating a following and gathering email subscribers without using multiple platforms.
Built-in Audience. The referral network and community can help you grow more quickly and find your tribe of people, which you need if you want to write and publish books.
These benefits are huge for anyone starting or wanting to simplify their setup as a creator or writer. It is a great place to start creating your author platform.
Final Thoughts on Substack
Writing online is hard, and self-publishing can be difficult without a platform. But Substack makes creating your author platform much easier, growing a following, earning email subscribers, and selling books.
This is the new frontier for authors.
It isn’t too late to get started. It’s the right time to jump in, build your platform, write some books, and start your Minimalist Author Business.
My name is J.R. Heimbigner, and I am a #1 Bestselling Author on Amazon with 14 self-published books. I have two things I want to share with you:
A short book to help you use your Substack posts to write books.
The First Draft Masterclass. I share exactly how to write your first draft so you can get that book published!
Have a book already? See how I can promote it with my newsletter!
Also, this post may contain sales or affiliate links, so I might get a little kickback if you purchase anything. Thank you in advance!
I don’t understand this part: Send emails regularly to your subscribers, who are then available to review on Substack so you can create backlinks.
Review what? Backlinks to your blog posts? I’m genuinely curious, can you explain this a bit?
Thanks for this. I started a few days ago to share stories, and now I'm trying to learn how to use the app. Appreciate the words of encouragement!
