I love Ted Lasso. I wasn’t sure I was going to initially because of the crude humor and things, but the show had enduring qualities that quickly brought my wife through all three seasons.
What I love about Ted Lasso the character is his positivity, his inclination for forgiveness, and the fact that he cares for the people around him. These are some of his most inspiring traits, and I think I could use more of these traits.
The world of AFC Richmond and the climate he moved into in the show is a different story. Characters are scheming, people are unkind, and everyone wants to show why he is the wrong choice for the coach of that football team.
In the pilot episode, he is interviewed by the press, and Trent Crimm from the independent states all the reasons why he is the wrong choice, ending with an expletive saying, “Is this a f***** joke!”
And Ted Lasso isn’t phased by this at all.
Sometimes, as a Christian writer, I feel like Ted Lasso when the Trent Crimms of the world need to tell me all the reasons why I shouldn’t be writing my books.
The Trent Crimms, by the way, aren’t always non-Christians. Sometimes they are well-meaning believers or not-so-well-meaning believers too. They often need to tell me why I can’t or shouldn’t do something.
Do you ever feel that way? Do you have Trent Crimms in your life?
Today, as I sit at my kitchen island and work on my next devotional, I face some of those Trent Crimms. No, not directly, but in my head, they are standing up, looking at me smugly.
And all I can do is shrug, smile, and move on with my life. I’ll let my work speak for me, and I will believe in the process, product, and calling of my life. That’s all I can do. And you know what? Maybe it will all work out.
Why does this matter to you?
We all have Trent Crimms. Sometimes they are friends or family. Other times, they are people who don’t like your work. No matter what, these folks don’t believe in what you are doing, and while they think they get a say in what you do, they don’t.
I want to encourage you today to push past the Trent Crimms, believe in your work or what you are doing, and see what happens. It might just change your life, and it might just change the lives of the Trent Crimms.
