What I Discovered About Substack Over The Summer
I have been writing online consistently since 2017. And while I have had a self-hosted blog and written on platforms like Medium and Vocal.whatever. I have found that Substack might be the place that takes the cake. Here’s why:
You can still be in control of your email list, but they will help you grow it too.
I was never a fan of Medium’s email list option. Those things get sent to the trash quickly, or worse, the spam folder, so it never seemed worth trying to grow email subscribers on Medium.
Having a self-hosted blog was fun until it became annoying to see how much work it is to keep it up and running. I keep thinking I will return to it someday, but I won’t, and I should give up that idea.
However, Substack is a blog, and your email service is provided in one spot. And with Notes, it’s a whole new level of social media. I love this space for growing an email list and connecting with readers.
Everything comes here anymore, and this is the home base of my author platform. Which is the second valuable lesson from the summer:
Substack can become your author's home base.
If you are starting, this is the place to be. And this is how I would encourage you to get started:
Write one daily Substack Note.
Engage with ten (10) other Substack Notes Daily.
Write one regular post a week and send it to your growing email list.
Share that post on your other social media platforms.
Build relationships with other Substackers and watch your platform grow.
If you want to write a book, too, I have an opportunity for you. You can also learn how to use your new author home base!
What’s that opportunity?

So honored to have made the list :))
I’ve been doing a note a day this month. Building content for next book. I’m trying to engage but have to be more concentrated in that. I have been posting a newsletter once a week. I must remember to copy and send to Medium.
Thanks for great tips.
