Growing up, my school would have book fairs twice a year.
Scholastic Publishing would bring reps with tons of books you could purchase for discounted prices. I loved this time of the year because I could pick up many books.
Even as a kid who couldn’t read very well, I loved picking up as many books as possible to read later. I remember I saved up all the money I could one year and bought two dozen books as a kid.
Well, today, I am offering a book fair on my books.

Alright, now that I’ve got that out of the way. I want to share something with you about book promotion.
Self-Published Authors: You are the Director of Book Promotion
I routinely talk to self-published authors on X who share how frustrated they are that their books aren’t selling. When I ask them what they are doing to sell their books, many tell me they are doing nothing.
Nothing?
Yep, that’s right, nothing. When I ask whether they have tried promotions, almost everyone says they don’t have the money to run ads.
Which I get, I don’t have a crap ton of money to run ads either. Yet, I do from time to time. After we jump this hurdle, I ask about their online presence. These are some of the answers I get:
Well, I blog sometimes. I don’t really like social media so I don’t post anything. Why would I try to collect people’s emails?
My last inquiry as I look for ways to help is one question: Do you want people to buy your book?
I’m not trying to be mean, but I will not sugarcoat it. If you want to sell books, you need to do the selling. No one else will do it for you. You need to be the one putting in the work.
If you do, you will sell books. If you don’t, well, you won’t.
For all the self-published authors out there, what are you doing to promote your books? Let me know in the comments!
