You can go without hiring an editor.

This is especially true if you are starting and trying to learn the self-publishing process. At that point, go through the steps of self-publishing yourself to figure out how it works.

However, once you have created your first book and published it and want to start writing more books, you will need to find a quality editor.

This is an essential step because this person will take your books to the next level. A good editor will do more than find simple typos, and this is what makes a book shine and helps you get reviews.
