Dear Writer,
I have an issue with the writing/publishing frequency debate. People like to debate how often you should write and how often you should publish. And everyone seems to like to give each other har hard time about it. Mostly in a passive aggressive manner.
Today, I as I was scheduling my week I found that I will be writing everyday (which is my practice), and publishing every day of the week. And I realized that this wasn’t possible for me when I first started out.
In fact, in the beginning, it was a miracle if I could publish a story once a week. But, things have changed. I have gotten faster, my time to write is the same, but I have a system in place to help me publish regularly.
I’m putting and end to the debate.
When it comes to publishing, publish whatever is sustainable for you! Don’t do what I do simply because that is what I do. If you can publish only once a week, then publish once a week. If you can publish 10 stories a week, then do it.
There is no point in having an unrelistic goal to publishing content online if you cannot be consistent and it is not sustainable for your efforts. Doing anything more than you can do is a fools errand. You will burn out and quit.
So, what can you realistically do in a week. Set that expectation with yourself. Create a plan. And then execute it. If you over extend yourself, then adjuster. It’s okay. Don’t measure yourself on me or anyone else. Focus on consistency and sustainability.
Behind-the-Secenes
I am currently writing from my kitchen island while my almost two-year-old eats her breakfast at 6:00 am. She is an early riser. I schedule for myself a time to write between 6:00 am and 7:00 am. And sometimes I fit a little in during the day at random times.
But this morning, I am writing while serving breakfast and chatting with my daughter. Heaven knows I am not going to publish a bunch of content this morning unless I have a small cache of stories built up (which I do).
Today, I have one story on Medium, a post on LinkedIn, and some Instagram posts too. And of course this post. The Medium post was pre-written last week. And the LinkedIn post is a derivative of the Medium post. This saves me time. Instagram is different, but not a huge deal.
Thank you!
Thank you for reading, partnering with me, and for the work that you create online. If you have any questions, jump in a leave a comment on this post on Substack! I’d love to help you in whatever way I can!
