I don’t like making predictions about things, if I am frank.
Yet, this year, I think there are some incredible things on the horizon for self-publishing, so I will share what I think this year holds for writers, authors, and the self-publishing world.
As my three-year-old would say, “Let’s dig in!”
Bold Prediction #1: 50% Market Share
In 2023, the market share of self-published books, specifically ebooks, was 30-34% self-published versus traditional publishing. I think this year, we could hit 50% with the growing popularity of self-publishing and its accessibility.
Bold Prediction #2: AI Writing Will Die Out
This year, I wrote a short storybook for my kids with the help of ChatGPT. It was a great process and super helpful (Here’s how I did it). But I don’t think it will be a sustainable habit, and I think it will crash and burn fast for all those trying to make a quick buck doing it.
Bold Prediction #3: Self-Published Audiobooks
This is the next frontier for self-publishing authors. My goal for this year is to get more of my books on audio because I think more people are heading back to listening to them in their cars on their drives, and it is an easier way to consume books.
Final Thoughts
There has never been a better time to write and publish a book. Now is your time to do it, too. I think first-time authors could self-publish their first three books in 2023 and start to see their lives change.

I think these predictions hit the mark. I enjoy books in audio form now more than physical or e-books. I did the reading for my book on Audible and it was a BIG job. You'd be surprised how many times you say "Um" or skip over a word when you are trying desperately not too. If I can write and publish two e-books mext year I'll be thrilled.
